New Mexico’s Food and Drug Administration

Smith’s Food and Drug Administration were established in 1938 by administrator W. A. Smith. It is one of the regulatory bodies in the country for regulating food production, processing, handling, and distribution. Its main functions are to promote awareness of food safety and promote the development of sound food handling practices. The FDA does not regulate directly to food or drugs, but it does regulate indirectly through the setting of standards for those industries.

Because of these indirect means – the FDA plays an important role in the community in regulating things such as local zoning, hazardous chemicals, and sanitation. When a local governing body finds that certain activities are not in keeping with the local or state laws, they will often try to have the offending activity stopped in order to protect the public. In the case of Smith’s Food and Drug Administration, they decide what level of regulation is appropriate. If the local governing body makes a decision that is in violation of the law, they will be forced to institute enforcement measures in order to ensure compliance with the law. This includes regulating the manufacture, handling, and storage of food and drugs.

When the FDA approves a new drug – it issues a warning regarding the potential for abuse and addiction. They do this specifically for drugs that are used for depression, arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, lung disease and blood pressure. The state regulates the sale of supplements and dietary supplements in New Mexico, but the local regulate them separately. Many cities around the country, including Albuquerque, are now starting to enact ordinances that are similar to those found in the state regulations.

It should be noted: that there are several different types of supplements and dietary supplements that are regulated by the FDA. The FDA only inspects food manufacturers for controlled substances, while local and city governments to inspect and control health care clinics, hospitals, schools, and other locations where people get drugs and substances for self-care purposes.
