What is Coffee Roast?

For most of our history, coffee has been served either hot or cold. Hot coffee is actually an instant coffee that usually contains sugar and cream in a pod. Cold coffee is created by forcing hot water through fresh or semi-raw coffee beans in a pressure cooker. Both have similar brewing processes and both use coffee grinders to make coffee. But what are they made of?

COFFEE is a caffeinated beverage prepared from ground coffee beans, usually roasted black, the seeds of selected Coffee a species. All coffee beans used in commercial production must be freshly harvested from a specific, clean source; otherwise, all fruit should also be processed from a clean source using a natural product as an initial raw material, called green coffee. Green coffee beans must then be crushed and mixed with water in a commercial pot or press, typically with a mesh basket to allow for air flow. The beans and water must be allowed to sit until the desired strength is reached, typically around 90 seconds, depending on the coffee bean.

This basic process is followed in all major coffee bean varieties produced in the world today. The second step in the brewing process is to add sweeteners to create a rich, dark, and creamy coffee beverage. These ingredients are derived from sugar and cocoa powders, but can be anything that tantalizes the palate. In general, dark roasts yield fuller, richer flavor, while light roasts tend to be less intense and flavorful. After the coffee bean is roasted, it is then placed in a press or pot, referred to as a drip machine, to begin the cooling process.

The coffeemaker will often measure water or milk into one of two different measurements: small ounces for a glass of hot beverage, and large ounces for a cup of warm beverages such as tea or hot chocolate. Before putting the coffee bean into the drip machine, it is essential to fully brew it through a press, as the amount of water added to the press may not adequately cool the coffee. The water reservoir should be half full, however. It is essential to ensure that the coffeemaker keeps a close eye on the water temperature, as overheating can cause the water to boil.

When the coffee bean has finished the coffeefest process, it will then be moved to the hotplate. From here, it can sit for a couple of minutes to allow all the creases in the bean to harden before being removed. At this point, the coffee should be brewed and served right away, or within a couple of hours. If brewed and served immediately, it will become stale within a day or two, and the aroma and flavor will have been damaged. Most coffeefest operators add a final sweetener, such as sugar, at this time.
